Today we have the privilege of sharing an early stream of “Veritas” the latest featured track taken from Porto, Portugal-based atmospheric/post-black metal trio CHANTS‘ debut full-length album ‘Echoes‘. Formed between ex-members of Gaera and Nihility roughly one year ago these folks hit the ground running beyond birth, readying eight internally shot curses with the goal of extruding their own stylized quintessence. Fans of their prior gigs are probably the most obvious mark here as the style of ‘Echoes‘ is thunderous in sound and dramatic in its ringing-and-rushing thread, a flood of dire moods and aggressively wrought movement guaranteed to catch the ear of post-‘With Hearts Toward None‘ generations of atmospheric black metal ideation. Characterized by many-runged ladders of ringing discord and slow-blazing melodic arcs their work is consistently engaged here, holding fast to the forlorn intensity of their work without dropping into cloying sappiness. It makes for an album which grips with its tension to point of righteous immersion and doesn’t let go for its ~47 minute duration.

Our subject for today, “Veritas”, appears midway through Side A as a confrontational turn beyond the flowing melancholia of the two pieces that precede it. Taking a minute to ready themselves with a stamping gait before bringing the nuclear warmth of their rush, Chants display a bit of bravado as they duck back into their stream on this pivotal piece. The effect lines up with songwriter, lyricist and guitarist/vocalist M.V.‘s vision for its place within the experience: “With Veritas, I wanted to explore the hidden truths we carry within, the shadows we keep buried, and the things that remain unseen beneath the surface. There is something occult in the act of confronting oneself, a journey into the unknown where truth and illusion become one. Sometimes, the darkest things are the ones that reveal the most about who we really are.“
