Today we have the privilege of sharing an early stream of “Here Lies Death” the latest featured track taken from Iquique, Chile-based death metal quartet ROTTEN TOMB‘s third full-length album ‘Vestiges of Tortured Souls‘. Active in their local underground since 2016 by way of folks known for their work in Atomicide the focus of this band has long been pure death in subject and sub-genre. Wrathful, dismally atmospheric as it is morbidly introspective their work has thus far been stoically above-average, in fact the band’s 2022 debut album was my album of the year when it came out and as such I could not be more stoked for the continued evolution of their work here.
This time around Rotten Tomb‘ve intended to stoke greater thematic tension within their work as they sharpen the cohesion of riff-to-riff authorship and incorporate deeper-set melodic values within these nine songs. The effect is no less signature in its concoct as we find on today’s feature “Here Lies Death” a late album piece which embodies these refinements while upholding the dark, thunderous grime they are known for. The combination of introspective and confrontational movements on this piece do well to illustrate deeper contemplation of Death’s perception within culture and how it shapes minds by way of fear and tradition, encouraging the listener to confront rather than escape morbidity. The band elaborate:
“When we wrote ‘Here Lies Death’ we weren’t trying to describe death as an ending so much as a system people build around it. The imagery of skulls, catacombs, hidden brotherhoods etc. is deliberate. It’s less about horror and more about ritual, about how fear gets organized into doctrine and architecture.
There’s a tension running through the lyrics: punishment versus meaning, faith versus denial, transcendence versus decay. Lines like ‘submission to apocryphal resurrection’ or ‘life assumed as a pilgrimage’ are meant to question whether these structures actually bring us closer to understanding death or just distance us further from confronting it honestly.
We leaned into dense, almost suffocating language because that’s what these spaces feel like to us. Overwhelming, symbolic, and oppressive. At the same time, there’s an invitation in the final lines to not escape death, but to face it directly, to sit with its silence instead of masking it with myth.
It’s not a comfortable piece, and it’s not supposed to be. It’s about stripping away the veil and asking what’s left when the rituals fade.”

Per the Press Release:
Chilean death metallers ROTTEN TOMB proudly announce the release of their third full-length album, “Vestiges of Tortured Souls”, set for June 6th, 2026 via Nuclear Winter Records. The album will be available on LP, CD, and cassette formats, further cementing the band’s commitment to the underground tradition.
Formed in 2016 in Iquique, ROTTEN TOMB have steadily risen as one of the most compelling acts within the South American extreme metal scene, blending death metal with doom-laden atmospheres and occult undertones. Following the strong impact of “Visions of a Dismal Fate” (2022) and the equally praised “The Relief of Death” (2024), the band now returns with their most ambitious and fully realized work to date.
“Vestiges of Tortured Souls” stands as one of the most anticipated death metal releases of the year. On this new record, ROTTEN TOMB refine their sonic identity without sacrificing intensity or authenticity. The riffs are sharper and more cohesive, while the melodies take on a more prominent role, painting soundscapes that feel more sorrowful and evocative than ever before.
Without losing any of the crushing heaviness and sense of decay that defined their earlier material, the band now delivers songs with an immediate and lasting impact. Each track strikes a balance between overwhelming force and carefully crafted lead guitar work, resulting in compositions that are both memorable and devastating.
The album channels the oppressive weight of the genre’s darkest pioneers alongside a deeply mournful and introspective atmosphere, while still maintaining a distinct and personal voice. This duality allows ROTTEN TOMB to push their sound forward, achieving a level of songwriting maturity that marks a clear evolution from their previous efforts.
“Vestiges of Tortured Souls” represents a major step forward for ROTTEN TOMB, solidifying their position at the forefront of Chile’s increasingly renowned extreme metal scene and extending their reach far beyond national borders.
