Today we have the privilege of sharing an early stream of ‘Shades of Night‘ the debut full-length album from Indonesian death metal quartet NOKTURNAL. Formed by musician Aldi in 2018 and joined by a crew of three other anonymous hooded menaces this band presents a heavy rock and thrashing heavy metal spirited form of dark death metal music on this formidable yet flowing debut LP. Wrathful in its bursts of elite death metal accost as they shout into the void yet slinking in their morbid realm of shadows just as often, there is a refined stature and a beast within ‘Shades of Night‘ which entertains much in the spirit of galloping overseers Tribulation and Sweven yet stands capable of wounding on the level of say, Venenum. Gloriously dramatic presentation and impeccably arranged dark melodic allure make for an infectious admirably realized debut album which sets itself apart in patient stalk and reveal here, easily marking its place as one of the finest and most unexpected records of May. Each of the five pieces here will readily convince but I’d suggest taking special note of “Dagger of Will” for its captivating aggression, the representative “Blood and Valour” for its epic-thrashing vision, and of course the Sam Gopal cover of “Cold Embrace” that closes the album, a piece which reinforces the gloom-ridden classic heavy rock/metal spirit at the heart of their work.
