Today we have the privilege of sharing an early stream of “Vermiform” the second preview song taken from ‘The Grand Arc of Madness‘ the debut full-length album from Sydney, Australia-based death metal metal project SARCOPHAGUM. Comprised of current and former members of Golgothan Remains as well as Decrepid, Tenebrific and Ashen Horde these folks set out to create darkly introspective death metal, thick with atmosphere and fluid in its motion. “Vermiform” comparatively eases up beyond the two pieces that precede it which balance thrilling brutality with a wandering soul’d sense of movement. Here we are set within the brooding aether, given a chance to stare deeper into what they’re capable of at more of a mid-pace while also offering a bridge to the grand finale which follows, acting as an important point of depressurization and mounting dread within the full listen. The band comment on the placement and intent of “Vermiform” in relation to the whole of the experience:

“’Vermiform’ breaks the frantic pace set by the album openers as a slower, sludgier crawl into the cold murk of the earth, featuring more pronounced melodic and dissonant tendencies, building to an ethereal climax. The slow, imminent dread is conjured lyrically through a retelling of folk stories of arterial ancient mine shafts calling people to their deaths. In ‘Vermiform’, they become living masses, veins of blood and gore, sustained by victims drawn in by the whisper of the malevolent mire…“

Australia’s SARCOPHAGUM will release their debut full-length, “The Grand Arc of Madness”, on December 6th 2024 through Nuclear Winter Records.

SARCOPHAGUM spawned to life in the early half of 2021, during the time of the plague as a new project featuring Golgothan Remains members past and present. The purpose being to provide a channel to explore new ideas and sounds in a studio-only setting. The dark death metal realm remains the primary influence and a debut EP, “Conduits to the Underworld”, was released in 2022 through Nuclear Winter Records, followed swiftly by a stand alone single, “This Wrought Creation”. Now their full length debut is here, “The Grand Arc of Madness”. Poised to unleash a soundscape of disharmony and terror over the listener, the angular horror awaits…

Both a culmination of their already characteristic aesthetic and a whole new twist upon it, “The Grand Arc of Madness” sees SARCOPHAGUM fusing clanging angularity with haunting atmospherics, chaos with eerie melodicism, epic narrative with primal crush.
