Today we have the privilege of sharing an early stream of “To Protect and Severe” the latest preview song taken from ‘Purification Through Sacrifice‘, the sophomore full-length album from Monza, Italy-based death metal quintet HUSQWARNAH. With this second LP these folks have made an effort to stand out on the pure death metal playing field, still writing gory and fairly straight forward death metal songs but mixing up their pacing and inspiration a fair bit throughout the album’s eleven or so songs. Today we have the opener, their big shotgun moment (beyond a brief intro) where they’re not only telling a beyond twisted story about a cannibal cop but also relaying some of the major goals of the album within this song up front. The band comment on the song and the albums lyrical themes in general:

“‘To Protect and Severe’ is the first song on the album and 100% represents the new Husqwarnah direction, which, compared to the previous works, see us adding a considerable dose of brutality to our usual traditional death metal style. It seemed like a good ‘business card’ to us: our attitude is not to invent a new blend of death metal, but to mix the ingredients as best as possible to obtain a result that is as satisfying as possible for our own taste. Something with a strong live impact, classic but not generic. This song plays on the US police motto ‘To protect and serve’. The theme is developed in a ‘gore’ key: we have a cannibal policeman who loves to punish drunk drivers by kidnapping them and bleeding them to death, just to later serve them for dinner to his unsuspecting wife. Violence, blood and cannibalism, but the song, between the lines, also makes us reflect on concepts such as the abuse of power and the instincts of ‘private justice’“.

The band was formed in 2019 from an idea of musicians who at the time were part of acts such as Black Rage, In-sight, Atlas Pain and Sojourner. After a debut show supporting Asphyx and some line-up changes, the band entered the studio to record their debut album “Front: Toward Enemy” in 2020. After its release in 2021, HUSQWARNAH kept themselves busy on the live front, sharing stages with acts such as Mortuary Drape, Baest, Discharge, High On Fire and Voivod. The latter show was recorded and then independently released under the title “Live At Bloom” in 2023.

HUSQWARNAH‘s death metal is as genuine and convincing as it can possibly get, paying homage to certain traditional formulas dating back to the early nineties, with songs that are particularly compact in structure and dynamics, ideal for being performed live and thus reminiscent of bands such as Asphyx, Bolt Thrower and Benediction.
